The story of Zoomin’ Night begins in 2009, when, at the invitation of Michael Pettis – the owner of the legendary Beijing rock club D-22 and the founder of the label Maybe Mars – Zhu Wenbo began organising an experimental music series called Zoomin’ Night every Tuesday at D-22. At the time, Zhu Wenbo had just began making music himself, and a new generation of musicians was emerging in Beijing, exploring the boundaries between experimental music and noise rock. Without a doubt, Pettis saw the potential in the movement.
Thanks to the combined efforts of the community, the weekly Zoomin’ Night concerts continued for many years. There was a constant stream of new musicians joining in, and the music they were making was constantly evolving. In 2012, D-22 closed shop, but in the same year the Zoomin’ Night series relocated to Pettis’ new bar, XP Club. By the time XP Club closed in 2015, Zoomin’ Night had organised approximately 200 shows. Since then, Zoomin’ Night stopped presenting the weekly concert series, and shifted focus to become a cassette label. To date (2024), Zoomin’ Night has put out more than 70 cassette releases.
Zoomin’ Night’s musical direction has undergone numerous changes over the years, but it has always maintained a focus on newcomers to the musical scene, as well as new works and new forms of expression. Many people taking their first steps with music gave their first performance at a Zoomin Night event. Others had their very first album, or the result of a new direction they were taking, released on the label. Zoomin Night’s aesthetic and operating strategy is low-cost, lo-fi, low-barrier-to-entry, simple, and DIY, showcasing the moments of surprise that are possible in direct practices of music that are open to everyone.
